The Kaduna River

The tree complained about the elephant grass
To a mountain awaiting the desert
And before the huts, upped and left the land
The earth had altered its shape.

The rains went on one more leave
Changing the river
once fiery brown
To trickles of clear green
disguising the fate of crocodiles
with the laughter of hyenas
